Philosophy as Meta-Paradigm

This essay is on the border between prose and poetry. Its intent is to offer a definition of philosophy as meta-paradigm, and to sketch some of its main elements. The central ele-ments discussed are: (1) silence, (2) analysis, and (3) physicianship. An epilogue closes the essay in which I hope to offer provocation for further thinking about philosophy as meta-paradigm.
Readers and listeners will note my great indebtedness to a number of important thinkers and traditions, some present and represented here tonight.**
I. Definition
Philosophy as meta-paradigm is a way of continuing the philoso-phical search into creativity. It is a way that seeks to push back the boundaries of what is comprehended, honored, and utilized in creativity. Meta-paradigm is a new word, meant to help make available to human beings as much of the richness of the creativity as might be possible. This word has the advantage of little or no past usage in the field, and therefore gives the opportunity for unpredigested thinking about this whole area of inquiry.
Hyphenated into two words, meta and paradigm, the initial meanings of the words follow exactly the standard dictionary meanings of the words. In the dictionary we find meta to mean with and after and paradigm to mean pattern, example, or model. To be sure, we must look for meta-paradigm in the midst of paradigm, but understand that meta-paradigm is the opening of the creativity beyond paradigm. Meta-paradigm transcends but includes paradigm. This is the way that creativity works and reworks all things continuously throughout the universe.
It seems true to say that philosophy need constantly to examine itself—its points of departure, its nerve for inquiry, its resiliency in scope and depth, its relations to personal and social behaviors and values. Bearing all this in mind, philosophy as meta-paradigm begins in the midst of things and directs attention and energy to the as-is-ness or suchness of experience. This is the creativity of experience, and provides a kind of floating anchor for meta-paradigmatic inquiry, the rooting and the dwell-ing of feeling, thinking, and acting in the fleeting concreteness of living.
With this beginning, philosophy has a good chance to break free and beyond philosophy as paradigm. Philosophy as meta-paradigm begins in the middle of the logic of substantive thinking, but quickly includes that thinking in an efflorescent collage of meta concerns and considerations. Philosophy as meta-paradigm returns us to the teeming concreteness of experience. Here is the creativity, the living challenge to all of the abstract paradigms, requiring that they bend, reformulate, and include more, as philosophy itself functions freely and flexibly as the questioner of all abstractions.
In this way, philosophy can be both technical and seminal in its definition and practice. Philosophy as meta-paradigm works at the prizes both, but stresses the need for more emphasis upon the seminal presently overshadowed by a world of philosophical emphases heavily technical, and therefore heavily expressive of philosophy as paradigm.
Epistemic claims, their rivals, and the demanding requirements that must be met in order to sort out their strengths and shortcomings are very important parts of the philosophic enterprise. Such is also true for the other established areas of philosophy such as metaphysics and axiology. For the most part, however, these and still other areas of philosophy remain philosophy as paradigm. They emphasize the classic texts, the carefully formulated reasonings, and rigorous conclusions that constitute paradigmatic inquiry.
Current conditions of life explain a good deal of the appeal of philosophy as paradigm. During the twentieth century philosophy all over the globe has been increasingly regarded as a profession with its canons for rewarding and penalizing its professionals. With this we have seen the growth of philosophy and the increase in the numbers of philosophers so officially recognized.
This can be termed gain in a sense for philosophy and philosophers. Yet in another sense it is too much, the success of narrow and narrowing philosophical activity, squeezing verve out of our inclinations to wonder, to think, to freely follow our seminal and shareable intuitions and insights. We wear ourselves out chasing the ghost of technical expertise foisted upon us by cultures narrowly analytic, excessively talkative, and largely devoted to only the welfare of their own members.
Philosophy as meta-paradigm takes us in another direction. It calls our attention and capability to the creativity, to the supremely active possibilities to be with as well as beyond what is established, honored, and rewarded. It sets us out in the direction of the silence of meditative thinking, the habit of generous analysis, and the lure of physicianship for the whole Earth.
II. Silence
Meta-paradigm honors silence the silence of remembering, and imagining; the silence of analysis and meditation. Such is a spontaneous, inward turn, oneself alone with oneself, giving room and time for the need and capability for the opening of philosophical insight and spiritual sensitiveness. Mindful of the obligation to share the power of this spontaneous turn in community, the silent play of meta-paradigm shows itself filled with motivation to carefully nurture the mind within the womb of the natural and sustaining creativity. Undistracted by the personal and social clamor, meta-paradigm as silence waists, listens, and prepares as one's rational capability monitors and acts upon the surging and promising energy of the creativity.
Free from the ties that diminish and distort, meta-paradigmatic silence gives vision and effort to encourage and expand the understanding, appreciation, and embodiment of the ties that liberate and enhance the individual and the community, as each is challenged to permeate the other with the most vivid and enabling qualities.
In the dark, retaining and enlarging the draping richness of the shadows, meta-paradigm as silence rejuvenates without words, calls without languages, makes ready the flow of burgeoning-felt qualities from the lucid awareness of the hidden but now awakened human self. This is invitation and overture of all living things to one another. It is the carrying forth of possibility, the interweaving of the tenuous and tangible web of creativity, the resonances, echoes, and trailing-off of words into silence--the point at which paradigmatic statement is questioned and returned into perspective within meta-paradigmatic no-saying.
Light and shadow belong together in meta-paradigm. The clarity is made real by the shadows and the dark. The numbra and penumbra gain definition and direction from the light of clarity. Not belonging apart, the complementary opposites interlace as creative field, providing initiative and withdrawal, the continuous, culminating, consummatory disclosures of the flowing and informing creativity.
Out from the stars, out from the psyches, out from the whole Earth, meanings are made, unmade, and remade as undulating gestalts, preserving the parts, carrying the parts into enfolding wholes within the enlarging reach of the supportive and transforming silence.
It is a time for stillness that is provocation from all that is quiet. Meta-paradigm as silence evokes compassion on behalf of the stifled and misused energy over the whole Earth and throughout the countless uni-verses. The compassionate turn is without extrinsic design and ego-com-portment. It is mainly analytic, the influent mood that watches and behaves kindly toward all living and nonliving things.
Becoming and made mindful, the sides are the center, and the entire figure depends upon the sincerity and devotion of the silence. Shifting direction and moving to the fuller recognition of the silence of meta-paradigm, all thoughts, beliefs, and assumptions are held back, unable to intrude as central participants and inhibitors within the unfolding infra-shifts of the creativity.
The silence knits together the divergent parts in harmony, in tapestry, in the symphonic ring of traditionless insight and feeling. The rise of possibility is both the cool light of thinking and the intense shadow of feeling, the coming together and living freely out-of-sight, in the ground as nurturer and provider for all that is ingredient in the moving and partaking creation.
The context is process as the process is context. Living, reviving, staying away, and coming to be, meta-paradigm as silence is the lure back within, untrammeled by point or paradigm, the giving up of what is there and secure and pointless.
In all of this the search is over, now understood as an ending of strife, assertion, and the compulsive forays into the protocol of dead and obsolete institutions and interpersonal relationships. Thus living becomes increasingly quiet as emotion, thought, and action experience the shrouded underneath of what is roundly lauded and desired.
Our flight then becomes multidimensional flow, the weaving and interweaving of the multiple, living parts, re-entering and giving out the energy that is the creativity that we may understand as the silence of meta-paradigm.
Without main dependence upon the external and visible, the awake silence is the opening for them, tying we humans most incisively and fruitfully into their limits and possibilities. Derivatively powerful, the established reasons and forms have as their reason for being the limitless creativity, that primal possibility that gives to them their potency and teleology.
Gathering at a center that is always disappearing, the silence brings a new, nonfoundational security. Alert now to the need to put the paradig-matic props in perspective, the emerging direction is directionless, the coming in and going out of the trustworthy anarchy, the honest and penetrating recognition of the natural integrity of the creativity itself.
Permeating the days and nights of time, silence sustains, supports, and beckons the human family in the way of courage the courage to be authentically alone and quiet, and to use this as resource, as possibility for becoming increasingly more fully participant in the vast and extended human situation.
Out of the whole Earth, inseparable from the whole Earth, meta-paradigmatic silence engenders and offers back energy and hope, labor and result, individual and cosmos. From this is the perpetual coming forth of the novelty that cleanses away the silt and dross, the ancient novelty that is the forming and speechless hallmark of events in the many regions over the planetary expanse, and in the vaster regions throughout the universe.
III. Analysis
Meta-paradigm is analysis, the generation of generous thinking that dissolves away the compulsive clutches of paradigmatic thinking. Here analysis is reformulated as rethinking, the continual outpouring of the corrective currents of thinking moulded upon the processive character of the many things that are, and are coming to be.
Swinging free of mere dissection, separation, and specialization, meta-paradigmatic analysis brings together the fragments, retaining their finely honed spheres of discourse but with the transcendent and holistic vigor the tentative sureness of interconnected and interconnecting part and whole, individual and community.
Reintroducing anima and compassion, free and freeing analysis follows the butterfly into the opening of spaces, the spiral flight, asymme-trically aligned with the shifting rays of the sun and the other natural, Earthly elements.
Analysis as meta-paradigm thus blooms and flourishes, negating the assumption that effective analysis only cordons off, and marshals thought and tools for disembodied understanding and use. Overturned is the assumption that successful analysis must leave behind the rich and untapped texture of experiencing, the murky percolation of primal feeling, instinct, and dance.
Analysis is and becomes giving and evanescent as it outlines the center and the flanks. Including definition, classification, and hypothesis, meta-paradigmatic analysis is synthetic self-correction, riding admisdst the coming-to-be of possibilities beyond established definition, culled classifi-cation, and tested hypothesis. Analysis gives positive power by soaking through the omissions, distortions, and arrogant affirmations.
Wakeful, watchful, wondering following and entering carefully and lucidly within the forever moving fields of creative energy, and then with the flowing facts giving direction and order. Such is analysis from the heart, joining head and hand, reverently contributing to the amplitude of creativity.
The aperture is pristine opening, and may be called the aperture of implexion. The opening is involving just as the involving is the opening. Carried into the light which is existential lucidity, the invitation is for reseeing and reenvisioning the format and the purpose, for coming-up to comprehend the limits and the joys of cognitive accessibility.
Not caught and bound by paradigm, meta-paradigmatic analysis sees through and includes, bringing together mind for the efferent flow, giving-out from the center the energies necessary to create, sustain, and transform all that is palatable and cherishable. Uncontained, unfraught, consonant and free, these broader and deeper thoughts are the first signs of a crea- tivity that is honored and efficacious.
Gone into proper perspective are the truths of definition, verified experiments, and the best available evidence of all kinds given over to the authentic, informing pulses of the creativity that radiates throughout both micro and macro worlds. Scintillating, gainless, and celebrant, the richer analysis offers no apologies, and seeks no recognition for knowledge and truth discovered and shared.
This living orientation is radical and benevolent conspiracy, the thinking together of many minds, a thinking that breathes, and feels, and touches all things with the compassionate interest of wishing to understand and to help. The reasons and designs of the analysis are here in the passing eternal now, in the rich pregnancy of the countless, fleeting moments of the life-giving creativity.
Analysis on behalf of the sated and comfortable is replaced with analysis that leads with an appropriate sense of adversity and genuine need, the call for a probing that is deft but sensitive, incisive but integrative, decisive but receptive to the hunches of the heart. Enabling and provocative, meta-paradigmatic analysis nudges and reminds of what might but should not be closed off, of what might but should not be petrified to view.
And the dualisms and dichotomies that prey upon our integrity are reviewed and re-experienced in the moving crucible of meta-paradigm. Their parting, separating, splitting, and isolating powers are thrust into new awareness, one part within the perpetual play of that which is more than but inclusive of paradigm. In this analytic place, what is finished is finishing, what is understood is understanding, and what is revealed is revealing.
The pain, suffering, and murder involved are questioned as uncalled for. They are correctly termed arbitrary, the outward expression of inward and serious negative chaos that comes through our collective worship of analysis that must solve a problem, make a point, and reap a profit. In the wake of realization, there is a large sweeping into focus of the dynamic and dedicated attention that is able to observe widely and with direct feeling the meta-paradigmatic power of whole brain thinking.
Richly promising analysis is meta-paradigmatic in nature and func-tion. Out of this kind of analysis is the return to spontaneity and wholeness which themselves must be understood to be virginal and unique. the trail for this type of analysis is essentially markerless, fraught and filled with an ebullience for what is sustainingly and educatively unspoken, unplanned, and unthought.
Meta-paradigmatic analysis does much of its work by following with bare attention and devoted concentration the developing stream of becomingness over the whole Earth. It is out and about seeking greater depth and scope, greater penetration into the inner sanctum of the enfolding and unfolding natural order of things, and greater compassion that turns with the creativity into all parts of the continually revised creation.
An essential clue is that the ever-fresh analysis is as quieting as it is active, as concerned as it is objective, as filled with respect for the mystery of the parts as it is for possession of clarity about them. This overcoming analysis is as natural as it is unpracticed, and as potentially liberating as it is strange to the paradigmatic mind. Meta-paradigmatic analysis makes possible physicianship for the whole Earth.
IV. Physicianship
Warm and informing, coming out of meditative solitude, meta-para-digmatic analysis makes itself ready for physicianship, the compassionate orientation that brings the whole Earth into gentle focus for commitment and practical action.
Physicians for the whole Earth now fully belong, making the compassionate turn with a mature ripeness of analystic clarity and unde-standing. With this the personal and social problems become uncircum-scribed, lending insight to one another by being allowed to interdict and interpenetrate as they naturally do.
Abolished are the cells and the keys that incarcerate the flesh, blood, and bones of special and common problems. Gone are the artificial wraps and tongs that strain and feign time, place, and solution. This is practical outpouring immense and moving practical outpouring, the continuing solubility of ego and its narrowing claims.
Fear, pride, ignorance and a host of other paradigmatic emotions conspire to keep us hidebound. We are held hostage by ourselves and each other, slipping at different times into the ways of paradigm, losing the loosening and exhilarating energies of meta-paradigm.
Still somewhat physicians for self, family, and nation, we cower and retreat, puzzled and angry that we should have to do more for the whole earth. Caught at the opening rim, the beckoning of meta-paradigm is difficult to hear, and is lost in the jostling for pleasure, position, and pace.
The rhythmical beat of physicianship is, however, insistent and declarative that we shed the achievements, forget the accumulations, and embrace the naturally divisionless topography of the entire world. Correcting the paradigms and including them appropriately for essential richness, physicianship embodies the living mixture of cultures, bringing all the wisdom of the parts to bear on the awesome problems and tragedies everywhere.
Physicianship enters also fully into the joy, investing into the outflowing and influent process, attentive and freshly watchful of entry and exit. The character of the power is with, not over. The hoped-for is without prefiguration and closing-off techniques.
Out of this particular time and place, meta-paradigm brings together the disparate and clamoring parts, calming and vivifying the differences and difficulties. In this active sway, the public becomes private, the private becomes meditative, the meditative calls up analysis. The subsequent surge then moves back into the public bringing knowledge, thinking, awareness, and kindness. Parameters expand, and at times fall away entirely.
Meta-paradigm brings inner and outer together in the passing, lumi-nous moments of nondualistic awareness. At these times, physicianship is born, leaving behind the claims for spurious separations and victories. Without predigested intent or purpose, the flow of felt creativity makes and remakes the practical nature and character of the whole Earth.
All is interknit and kaleidoscopic. As physicians for the whole Earth, we are observers and participants, taking in and giving out, following and helping to express intelligently the numerous cutting edges of the meta-paradigmatic novelty. The usual is unusual then usual again, making the third entry it seems into a different Earth of service and light, of realization and peace.
Disease, and famine, and war are confronted directly, Omnienergy replaces the externally imposed and rewarded workplace, as knowledge and power enter gently and fully into the feeling and mystery of individuals and cultures over the glove. No dreaming save that which is rooted in the wide range of the hard and harrowing realities. Physicianship assumes the responsibility for one in all, all in one.
Nativity, nascent and fresh, is the needed emphasis in order to act with onesness of will, intellect, emotion, and body. Drawing together, seeing directly, the curing gestures are spontaneous and sanguine, energy that is the flowing quality up, down, and out from the living void.
Somnolence and fatigue lose their grip of control as meta-paradigm calls individual selves out of their specific regions into the whole and turning Earth. Not just here and there but everywhere, physicianship gathers up as it has few self-conscious and self-regarding motives and meanings.
Wide, free, and flowing, the self is not contained and selfish, but rather the flow of the self is not contained and selfish, but rather the flow of the self is into every other self, the blurring of the lines that hitherto has protected hatred and meanness of the spirit. So released, the decisions become opportunities for intuited and expressed compassion, the carefully cultivated regard for the innumerable living human and nonhuman parts.
The push-pull is the past-present-future, inseparable each from the other, bringing heightened attention and action into the profound free play that is the serious work on the deep problems. Emerging now here, now there, physicianship for the whole earth is freshness of present action on behalf of the inseparability of the whole from the inviolate character of each of the parts.
Bridgeable and mutually supportive, the inner and outer reflect each other. In thinking, in feeling, in acting, the rhythms are intense, lucid, and constructive manifestations of the coming-to-be holism of meta-paradigmatic energy. Now quiet and alone, here speaking and connected, the real pulses flow together as surprising possibilities within the expanse of the sprawling creation.
The recourse is to meta-paradigm, the creativity that is and will be available for the taking up of the task of physicianship, the commitment to thinking, feeling, and acting on behalf of the whole Earth. In this way the new individuality has its chance--for escaping the chains of cultural paradigms, and for bringing the cultural paradigms into strengthening support for the life-affirming and life-enhancing possibilities beyond culture.
Thus the dramatic announcement is really very hard work, the cumulative toil informed and brightened by the silence of meta-paradig-matic analysis. Through this, the mania, solipsism, and treachery can be confronted directly, with the sensitiveness and thoughtfulness of a race living more fully on the outer edge of its deepest potentialities for intuition, intelligence, and loving action.
To pas through intensely with spiritual attentiveness and practical helpfulness is a chief benefit of the empowering creativity. Letting be and letting become with the immanent and impressive powers of meta-paradigm is the self-surpassing lure, the enduring invitation for the development of meta-dimensional experience that gives us the open and pathless way to become physicians for the whole Earth.
V. Epilogue
Philosophy as meta-paradigm intends to include and show peoples, worlds, and galaxies in its conceptual form. It emphasizes, without hesitation or apology, the rush of joy that rapture of creativity coming out, seeping in, and forming, then reforming all of the settled and cherished actualities everywhere. But this philosophical orientation always points to more it points to the serous pursuit of lucid thinking that comes out of the rush and rapture of the creativity. It seeks rapturous thinking, the kind of thinking that joins through its energy, bringing together the sensitiveness of feeling and the clarity of analysis.
A chief fruit of this thinking is the continual realization and application of conceptual nearness, itself made possible by the powers of nondualistic awareness. Such embodiment of thinking gives clarity and at times transcends clarity by dwelling with both spontaneous and disciplined resolve within the open reserve of the primordial creativity. In this way, thinking is always gestating, not fully developed, but rather making and remaking itself in intimate connections with the existential richness of the unfolding and enfolding natural order of things.
This nearness does not deny the paradigmatic meaning of analysis. On the contrary, it accepts its purposes and methods, now however bringing them into the much larger stream of meta-paradigmatic analysis with its fresh and refreshing commitment to dissolving the compulsive strands of thought, feeling, and action that pollute and poison human living.
Conceptual nearness helps to fashion what is meant by philosophy as meta-paradigm. It allows within the meaning of philosophy a starting point of passionate ardor as well as the development of the important methods of logical and empirical rigor. But now the rigor has a new home it belongs to the much larger sweep of natural events that comprise the ocean of reality, and helps keep humans apprised of the always close prepersonal motivating and forming energy. It is redefined as part of conceptual near-ness which itself is one vital part of the epistemological heart of philo-sophy as meta-paradigm.
Supportive and facilitating, the moment of conceptual nearness enables flight to the ecstasy of aloneness and return to the constasy of belongingness. This moment is full and rich in preservation and enhancement of individualized uniqueness, and deeply aware in appreciative understanding of all that is other than itself. Unfrozen, thinking is duration as time is experienced with and within the incipient and perishing droplets of creativity.
The creativity is meta-paradigm opening, closing, remaining conso-nant with its nurturing character, provider of novelty, the clearing away of heavy form and blinding light. Here form is flow, and light is scattered—the possibilities for creativity as both primal and articulated experience. Spreading from the center, the web of energy is the inside, the outside, the connective tissue that is the natural universe.
The image here is that of quietly swinging free, the coming out the coming together of the full moon and the penetrative intellect, the fusing of separateness in life, aspiration, and overcoming. Direct and caring, meta-paradigmatic consciousness swings free, over all places, without settled location and direction, coming as energy patterns spilling with power and grace over the entire Earthly creation.
The felt conceptuality and compassionate posture give rise to new philosophical opportunities. They engender silence, analysis, and phy-sicianship—the ways of the open journey away from the predigested and barren forms in the direction of borderless exploration, recognized with living emotion, and given importance through the energies and habits of a self-corrective human nature and conduct.
Such opening is abdication of mere paradigm, the falling away of structure that collars and makes ineffectual. This is freeing for the silence that complements what is said and drawn out, providing punctuation for the enunciated and explicit words, arguments, and points of view. A silence that is a settling between, the cumulative power of no-words is what is intended here.
In the opening of silence is the gathering effectiveness of analysis, the ability to forego acquisitive motivation, and all of the nagging desires that hold the mind captive and unable to break freely into the inescapable wholeness of personal and social living. Meta-paradigmatic silence breaks as waves upon the clogged and heretofore immovable obstacles within the thinking, feeling, and valuing infrastructures of the human personality, offering the energy necessary to cleanse away the self-claiming fixities and arrogations.
Physicianship rises and comes forth from this rich and selfless interiority of experience. Entering into, offering critiques of paradigmatic consciousness and culture, physicians for the whole Earth embody the unified and unifying strands from out of the natural and constructive order of things, fashioning themes and meanings illustrative of the processive unity that vivifies, enhances, and as majesty to the appearing and disappearing individualities.
Essentially carrying and sustaining connectedness over the whole Earth, silence-analysis-physicianship is busy combining ancient resources with the plethora of modern and post-modern awarenesses and their interpretations. Carving a way out of the morass of settled and unyielding perspective and prejudice, meta-paradigm is meta-paradigmatic energy that brings forward and expresses the individual as the whole universe, and the whole universe as the individual.
This is the creativity, the omnipresent currents of energy that buoy up and introduce courage into the human situation. Such is the drama of offering experience that facilitates and deepens feeling awakeness for oneself as intrinsically enmeshed within the entire universe, which itself is a beam of multi-faceted waves within waves within waves, the always coming and receding of the inimitable pulses of the creativity.
Philosophy as meta-paradigm listens and calls to both the inside and outside, to the incredible delicateness and potential of these pulses of the creativity. Philosophy as meta-paradigm makes its entry into every created intellectual, social, and technological form, gaining vitality from their contents, giving detailed critiques of their intentions and consequences, and seeing to bring together, to elicit the synthetic birthing and nurturing capability of all that is unactual, of all that remains as unborn and unnurtured within the individual and universe.
